PASSIVATION CHEMICALS
Passivation of metals (fasteners, metal hardware and component parts) is a process of metal corrosion protection with special solutions. Typically, passivation is carried out using salts or oxides (including sodium nitrite). The purpose of passivation is to make the metal surface inactive to the atmospheric air. Passivation can be performed in two main ways - chemical and electrochemical. With chemical passivation parts are immersed in a solution with the desired chemical, whereby at a certain temperature a protective film is formed. Electrochemical passivation is performed as follows. Substances which must be applied to the surface are mixed with an electrolyte. Further, while applying electric current, they are deposited on the surface of the product. The protective layer deposited electrochemically is more uniform, but this method costs significantly more than chemical one.
Chemicals for passivation
Passivation of fasteners, metal hardware and metal parts involves the formation of phase layers (films) in the interaction with the metal components of the solution in certain circumstances. The film is a dense waterproof barrier, which prevents rusting. The solutions used for passivation are produced by oxidizing agents that form sparingly soluble components. These include chromates, molybdates, nitrates in the alkaline environment. Usually passivated item or product is subjected to further processing. They may be coated with inhibitors (substances that slow or stop unwanted chemical reactions and processes), primers, paints and / or lacquers.
